Preparing for your future

Personnel Development

  • Have you thought about how you want to work both now and in later life?
  • Will there be opportunities with your present employer?
  • If you retire, how will your company or organisation manage when they lose the benefit of your experience?
  • Will you have an adequate income after retirement or, if not, how will you supplement your pension?

All these and more are questions which you may be asking yourself and which many of your older employees will also be asking. But to come up with some answers – in the interest of both the employer and the staff concerned requires sensitive and dedicated discussion in circumstances in which all the options can be objectively explored. Your organisation no doubt invests heavily in training and development courses for younger staff – courses which pay off by stimulating their happiness and sense of fulfilment, thereby decreasing staff turnover and improving productivity and workforce management.

However identifying appropriate staff development courses for your older workforce, at any level, can be much more difficult. For people in their fifties and sixties there may be no obvious route to further progress through the company. Some may be enthusiastic about re-training to enable them to take a different role within your organisation; others may be adamant in their resistance to this. Some may be keen to set up on their own, perhaps providing you with an opportunity for outsourcing; others may simply want to retire as soon as possible. Then again, others may wish to stay on after State Pensionable Age. The legislation on Age Equality in the workplace demands that employers offer similar personnel development chances to all staff, regardless of age. As a good employer it’s what you would want to do anyway but “it’s easier said than done”. Until now:

Mature Lifestyle and Career Audit The Mature Lifestyle and Career Audit is a short specially designed course to help older people and their employers to meet changes and challenges in their working circumstances. The Audit facilitators work with participants through reflective dialogue. Each individual is helped to evaluate his or her skills, attitudes and personal circumstances and to consider the options for both the pre and post retirement years.
