Preparing for your future

Personal Development

For all those interested in life long learning and exploring potential futures. Personal development relates to what you need to learn to take you were you want to be. Often people do not take the time to consider what they really want do. Ask yourself the following questions.

  1. Have you thought about how you want to work both now and in later life?
  2. Will there be opportunities with your present employer?
  3. Will your employer provide guidance or courses to enable you to develop or redirect your career?
  4. What opportunities are there for you elsewhere?
  5. Have you considered a portfolio career as a new way of working?
  6. Do you need help to identify your skills and abilities?
  7. Do you need help to write a CV?
  8. Do you need to develop your personal portfolio to show prospective employers?

All these and more are questions which you may be asking yourself. Today’s economic climate means that we can no longer expect to work for the same employer for long periods of time. Indeed there is evidence to suggest that individuals will have a minimum of three careers with several changes of employer during their working lives.

So when or how do you assess your working life and the learning and training needs you will need to instigate change. 4 Thought Solutions can assist you in assessing your learning and training needs.

The Audit facilitator works with participants either in small groups or on a one-to-one basis through interactive and reflective dialogue. Each individual is helped to evaluate his or her skills, attitudes and personal circumstances. The interactive, reflective dialogue relates to where you want to be, what you want to do and what you need to do to achieve what you want. Consideration is given to the options that may be available for the individual both now and the future. A career and lifestyle audit involves the sharing of information, the hopes and dreams of the individual; it is a powerful tool that can enable individuals to reassess where they are and where they want to be. In the words of George Eliot:

"It is never too late to be what you might have been."
George Eliot

Some people take a job as a stop gap either before undertaking further schooling or training and then never leave circumstances change. Others train and have careers in fields that please others or met parent’s wishes. A personal assessment allows them to review their development needs and can provide direction for a change in work and lifestyle.
